What is star schema grouping?

A star schema grouping is one where you have a fact in the center, and many dimensions linking directly to it. For example, a student-course-load table might be measured by semester, date, department, student home state, and so on.

Okay, that's fine, in a vacuum -- but how the heck does a star schema work in the context of a larger schema design? Is there some way to group items in a larger project in order to have intelligently-isolated star schemas within? This question is not addressed in the Cognos documentation from what we can tell.
