How do I set up semesters for course worksites?

In the old days (version 2.3 and older) sakai.properties contained a slew of settings such as termterm.3, termyear.6, termlistabbr.7, termiscurrent.10, termstarttime.12, termendtime.19

... yikes!

As of version 2.4 and beyonf, this stuff is finally where it should have been all along -- in the database.

The official word is:

The terms are no longer configured through sakai.properties. They are now provided through the course management service. The out-of-the-box CM implementation loads sample data if you include -Dsakai.demo=true in your JAVA_OPTS. The QA/release team wanted the QA and nightly servers have sample CM data, but to exclude the demo data load in the source checkout by default.

So to set things up properly you'd hook your campus-wide SIS to Sakai and populate your data magically that way. (When we figure that part out, we'll post a separate entry here.)

But for quick sample data, you can insert a few rows into your CM_ACADEMIC_SESSION_T (this is for version 2.4, remember). For example:

     > from CM_ACADEMIC_SESSION_T;
+---------------+------------+-------------+------------+------------+
| ENTERPRISE_ID | TITLE | DESCRIPTION | START_DATE | END_DATE |
+---------------+------------+-------------+------------+------------+
| sp07 | Spring2007 | Spring 2007 | 2006-01-01 | 2008-01-01 |
| su07 | Summer2007 | Summer 2007 | 2006-09-01 | 2008-01-01 |
| fa07 | Fall2007 | Autumn 2007 | 2007-01-01 | 2008-06-30 |
| sp08 | Spring2008 | Spring 2008 | 2007-01-01 | 2009-01-01 |
| su08 | Summer2008 | Summer 2008 | 2007-09-01 | 2009-01-01 |
| fa08 | Fall2008 | Autumn 2008 | 2008-01-01 | 2009-06-30 |
| sp09 | Spring2009 | Spring 2009 | 2008-09-01 | 2010-01-01 |
| su09 | Summer2009 | Summer 2009 | 2008-01-01 | 2010-01-01 |
| fa09 | Fall2009 | Autumn 2009 | 2009-01-01 | 2010-06-30 |
+---------------+------------+-------------+------------+------------+
9 rows in set (0.00 sec)

Note that the START_DATE and END_DATE don't reflect when the semester will begin or end, it's when you want that semester to show up inside Sakai on the session menu when you're creating your course worksites!
